The Curse of the Black Pearl is the title of the first film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, a swashbuckling action-adventure movie released in 2003 starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. The plot revolves around a cursed pirate crew and the efforts to break their curse. The Curse: Barbossa and his crew stole 882 pieces of cursed Aztec gold from the Isla de Muerta years earlier. The curse dooms them to a “living death”: they cannot feel pleasure, hunger, or pain, and moonlight reveals them as living skeletons. To lift the curse, every piece of gold must be returned to the chest along with a blood sacrifice from everyone who removed them.
