What’s in the theme?
The Saki (咲-Saki-) manga series, written and illustrated by Ritz Kobayashi, focuses on high school girls who are competitive mahjong players aiming for the national tournament. It blends elements of sports action, drama, and slice-of-life. The story revolves around Saki Miyanaga, a first-year high school student in the Nagano prefecture who initially dislikes mahjong because of negative family experiences. When playing with her family, winning would make them upset, while losing meant losing her New Year’s money, so she developed an unreal ability to consistently finish her games with a score of exactly zero (breaking even).
